Trochu Valley School update

Dear Editor:
I am happy to update you and your readers further on what is happening at Trochu Valley School.The biggest piece of news that may be of interest to you and your readers, is that there has been a change of contractor for the modernization project. Pentagon Structures Ltd. is now on board to do the project. They list over 50 school projects on their web site, so they come with a great deal of experience.
The following information comes directly from their website. Pentagon Structures Ltd. is an established Edmonton general contracting firm with an annual construction volume in the $30 to $60 million dollar range. Owned and operated by Albertans since 1967, the company is engaged in a multitude of various projects, ranging from light industrial to commercial and institutional construction. Major clients include all levels of Government, Hospital Boards, Municipal bodies and various City and Provincial School Boards. The company maintains throughout all seasons, a steady work force of carpenters, concrete finishers, survey personnel and highly qualified superintendents to undertake essential work phases of any project. Operating in Alberta for over 40 years!
The start-up meeting with this contractor took place November 21 and they indicated that they will be moving trailers onsite in the near future and their work will begin. The asbestos removal is still not complete but the gym and stage floors have been removed. With the general contractor on site, it is expected that we will see more things happening! Everyone concerned is till saying we will have a September 2014 opening.
It looks like winter has arrived and as we move into late November Christmas activities ramp up. We want to thank The Capital for allowing us our "What's NEWS" at Trochu Valley School  notice board each week. This is where the weekly activities are listed with upcoming dates that may be of interest to your readers. Thanks again for allowing me this forum. Your support for us is truly appreciated.
Yours truly
Mrs. Debbie Barkman

Is media biased or not?

To the Editor;
Is the North American media biased or not?  One has only to look at the coverage given Hurricane Sandy.  While the destruction in New York City was tremendous, according to media reports, one would think that only New York (& U.S.) was devastated by Sandy.
Before hitting the U.S. Hurricane Sandy hit Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba, leaving massive destruction on these struggling countries.
Haiti suffered enormous destruction, with a death toll of 52.
Jamaica sustained widespread power outages, flooded streets, damaged homes and at least one death.
The total cost of damage to private property and public infrastructure in the Bahamas is expected to reach $300 million.
The tiny country of Cuba had 200,000 homes damaged (15,000 destroyed) leaving 11 dead. Sandy ripped roofs off homes and destroyed 30% of Cuba's coffee & tomato crops and 90% of their banana crop laid on the ground. Santiago de Cuba (population 500,000) reported winds of 177 km/hr.  Siboney, just outside of Santiago, reported waves as high as 10 meters.
Gran Piedra, near Santiago had wind gusts up to 245 km/hr. The storm hit Santiago early Thursday (Oct. 25). Soldiers and work crews were distributing water and candles and clearing streets etc. on Friday. Bulldozers and other heavy equipment sent in by Cuban government were there within 24 hrs. Trucks bringing cable and other supplies for the electrical system along with utility workers streamed into the city from other parts of Cuba.  Still no coverage from North American media!
Quite different than what was experienced at Staten Island wouldn't you say?

Beware "Scareware" scam

Dear Editor,
Recently we have received several computers displaying a warning that the RCMP has blocked the computer because it was involved with child pornography. After a lot of research and communicating with several IT professionals around the country, we have found that it is a scareware virus. If your computer is infected, please call your local computer technician to help you remove this virus.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre released the following message: "Scareware" scam warning: The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has been receiving reports from Canadians who say their computers are being frozen or they have been "locked out" of their computers after receiving pop-up messages warning them their computer has been associated with child pornography. These warning messages, which claim to be from the RCMP or CSIS, tell the recipient to pay $100 dollars via Ukash so their computer can be "unlocked". These types of messages, commonly known as scareware, are designed to create such shock and anxiety that victims respond by sending money quickly. If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that it is a scam – these messages are not being issued by the RCMP."
If you've been "locked out" of your computer, it is an indicator that your system may have been infected with malware and you will need to take steps to address this problem. In this particular scam, your webcam will also be infected and may take your picture without your knowledge. You will need to take steps to protect your privacy.
Helpful Tips for Safe Daily Computer Use:
• Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus
• Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly
• Don't click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don't know
• Turn on your browser's pop-up blocking feature
• Never download antivirus software from a pop-up or link sent to you in an e-mail.
If you've received a scareware message, please contact your computer tech and Canadian Anti Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501) to report it.
Sincerely,
Rahul Massey

I hope this helps you decide

To the Editor;
When it's time for anyone to make a big change, it's hard. Especially when you've gotten comfortable in your home, but your health and safety are at risk. You do the best you can at getting the daily job of keeping the house and yard net in appearance, even though you know that your back can't take this anymore. You try to fool your loved ones and friends that you're not hurting and you take pain medicine to get by. Slowly but surely you begin losing balance and that's when you know that you are taking quite a risk. A risk you are willing to take because you don't want anyone to worry about you.
My mom is one of those people. We all love her so much and want her safe and happy, just like she kept us all these years. She has taken a couple of falls, and after her last bad fall, it was time to leave home and make the big change of moving to the Golden Hills Lodge in Three Hills. Although a little reluctant, she cooperated and we worried about what the change would do to her.
As if luck would have it, Three Hills has a fantastic Lodge. The first thing we noticed was how happy, friendly, and content the people were. Along with that was noticing how professional, pleasant and loving the staff was. We couldn't help but notice from the aroma coming from the kitchen that the chef knew what he was doing. It made us want to sit down and having something to eat. They have so many activities that give everyone a chance to get to know the rest while playing games, making things and I could go on and on. Only one week went by and we saw our mother in better shape and glowing. The best shape she's been in years. Rating the Lodge on a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to give it an 11.
The main purpose of this letter has a double blade. First is to give a big hats off and hug to everyone involved in making this home such a success. The second is for both the next elder and family wondering what to do. I hope this helps you decide. Thanks to the Lodge, we know she's safe and happy.
