Trochu’s Balkwill Pharmacy has recently changed owners from Isabel Whyte to Brandon Wagstaff and Shane Wagstaff. Brandon as the pharmacist and Shane is the accountant. The changing of hands officially occurred on Feb. 1, 2018, but Brandon still had to finish school.

Brandon Wagstaff graduated from the University of Alberta in the spring with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. After his graduation, he did 100 intern hours at Peters Pharmacy, in Three Hills.

“I’m excited to be done my schooling and be working, and excited to serve the community of Trochu and surrounding area,” said Brandon.

As of July 11, Brandon was no longer considered a pharmacy student or pharmacy intern and he was officially registered as a pharmacist.

“I wanted to practice in a small town, it’s where I’m from,” said Brandon. “It worked out well that I had the opportunity to come back to my hometown, Trochu.”

Shane Wagstaff, a minor shareholder at Balkwill’s, graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce with an Accounting Major and Finance Minor. After graduating, he became a CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) and CFP (Certified Financial Planner).

Brandon and Shane grew up in the Trochu area, attending Trochu Valley School.

Isabel Whyte, the previous owner of Balkwill Pharmacy, originally planned on retiring sooner, but once she was told about Brandon going to school to become a pharmacist, she decided to keep working until he could take over the business.

“He was my ultimate dream,” said Isabel. “Having someone from this area.”

Even though she no longer owns Balkwill Pharmacy, Isabel will still be working there as a pharmacist.

“It’s been an easy transition because he’s been such a great boss,” said Isabel.

Isabel took over the pharmacy from Jim Balkwill in 1999. She is very grateful to Jim and Grace Balkwill, the medical community, and the community of Trochu for all the support they have given her.

“I wish Brandon as much success or more success than me,” said Isabel. “The next generation should hopefully always do better than the last.”

Since the take-over, Balkwill Pharmacy is offering many new additions. They have been giving injections, some examples of the provided injections are Shingles Vaccine, Vitamin B12, and Depo-Provera. They are also now able to give Med Reviews, order lab tests, give Naloxone injection kits, and give out requisitions.

Within a year, Brandon is hoping to have his prescribing authority to be able to prescribe schedule one drugs.

Balkwill Pharmacy will also be able to administer the flu shot as of Oct. 15, 2018.
