REED, Grace Mary

We bid farewell to Grace Mary Reed, “Lovie”, cherished wife of Watson Reed. Grace passed from this life early on Tuesday, January 29th, with loved ones by her side. She leaves a mighty legacy! Those left to carry this honor are her brother-in-law, Marc Reed, sisters-in-law, Ruth Andrews, Eunice Berreth and Beth (Willis) Creighton. Her children, whom she loved so much, Mary (Rick) Poole, Hal (Marilyn) Reed, Ruth (Chris) Pelletier, Eileen (Bryan) McComish and Allen (Gail) Reed. From these 5, Grace was grandmother to another 16 and great-grandmother to 39 more, with #40 on the way. Such joy! Grace was born on April 7th, 1931 to George and Mathilda Andrews, at the home of Buzz Thomas. She was raised on a farm east of Three Hills, with her 4 siblings, Russell, George, Agnes and Lela. Grace fell in love with the boy next door, the love of her life, who lived a mile across the field; she had known Watson Reed her whole life. Grace attended Mount Vernon School, then moved to Three Hills to finish her high school. After graduation, she went to the University of Calgary for her 2 year teaching certificate. Her first teaching position was at Creekside School, but only for 2 years, because Watson snagged her and they were married on July 15th, 1953. Their life together began on the farm where they had their first 4 children, Mary, Hal, Ruth and Eileen. In 1960, they moved to the Ghost Pine Store, where they had the 5th and final child, Allen, in 1962. They operated the store and post office for 11 years, until the post office was closed. Grace went back to teaching in 1965, at the Three Hills School. She taught for 30 years, enjoying every minute of it. It was more than a job for Grace; it was her passion. In early 1976, Grace and Watson moved into Three Hills where they continued to enjoy their friends and family. After retiring from teaching at the school, she continued her role and tutored many kids, right up until the summer of 2017, when her last student graduated! Grace moved into the Golden Hills Lodge in 2017, quickly becoming a part of this community, enjoying the music, games and other great activities that were provided. Grace received such excellent care, for which we will always be grateful. Grace loved to knit! Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and countless others have teddy bears, topsy-turvy dolls and many other such creations – all labors of love. We acknowledge and are indebted to the staff at the Three Hills Hospital, who treated our Mom as their own. We are thankful to the staff at St Mary’s Health Center in Trochu, for the understanding and kindness they have shown Mom, as they continue to care for our Dad. To the countless students and friends, we cannot express enough what you have meant to Mom over the years. Mom was a woman of purpose and compassion – always the teacher! We will miss her every, every day. Family will meet at the graveside at Manor Cemetery, in Ghost Pine, on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 12:30. Mom’s Grand Farewell will be the same day, at 2:00 at the Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church in Three Hills, with a joy-filled reception to be held afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Three Hills School, to fund the Grace Reed Reading Nook. Donations to the CNIB would also be greatly appreciated.
