MAERZ, Lorraine Eliza

Lorraine Maerz

Lorraine Eliza Maerz (nee Vasseur) passed away suddenly on June 3, 2021 at her home at the age of 90 years young. Lorraine was born September 02, 1930 to Arthur and Martha Vasseur and grew up on the family farm in Ghost Pine. She attended Manor School and later attended school in Three Hills graduating in 1949. Lorraine immediately started working at Alberta Treasury Branch where she would eventually meet Bennie Maerz. Married in 1954, she quit the bank and devoted herself to her new husband and the farm west of Three Hills. Raising cattle, chickens and pigs, Lorraine took care of the livestock, garden and fruit trees while Bennie worked as a mechanic and did the farming at night and on weekends. Starting in a small home with a coal stove but no power or running water, they began their family which would soon result in Lorraine, Ben Jr. and Casey. A few years later Marlene and Stephen would make five children to look after. Lorraine raised a large garden every year and canned fruit and vegetables were a staple along with meat butchered from their own animals and in particular homemade sausage from the family recipe. Lorraine was known for her good cooking and she learned a number of German dishes over the years. Her freezer was never empty of baked goods “just in case someone might stop by”. Family or just visiting, no one ever went hungry in her house! Lorraine was really happy when they moved into their new home in 1973, with running water and a bathroom, just in time for Christmas. Mom was so proud and always talked about her 1949 Chev the first car she ever bought. She often said that she wished she had never sold it. Lorraine was a dedicated catholic attending faithfully at St Joseph’s in Three Hills and serving 60+ years in the Catholic Women’s League. She often volunteered her time helping neighbors and the local community and also served in the Order of the Royal Purple (Women’s Branch of the Elks of which Ben Sr was a member). Lorraine was predeceased by brothers Art Jr. and Henry, sister Yvonne Braconnier; husband Ben Sr, sons Ben Jr. and Casey and daughter Marlene Frere. She is survived by sister, June (Joe) Kanderka, daughter Lorraine (Ken) MacLean, son Stephen (Desiree), grandchildren Tanner (Martha) Frere, Dryden (Stephanie) Frere, Veronika (Adam Gottfried) MacLean, and great-grandchildren Mya, Bryson and Leah Frere. Due to COVID – 19 restrictions a private family funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charity of your choice. Kneehill Funeral Services, Three Hills, entrusted with arrangements. 403-443-5111.
