13th Annual SuperMen tournament held in Three Hills

Royals VS Vikings 2018

It was a busy weekend at Three Hills School and Prairie Christian Academy as the two schools hosted 16 1A/2A Boys’ Basketball teams from across the province. These teams competed to be the coveted champion of the 13th Annual SuperMen tournament. Teams from as far north as High Level and as far south as Lethbridge made the trek to participate in what has become a classic weekend. Both Three Hills teams were involved in the tournament: the Three Hills Royals, coached by Darryl Viste, and the Prairie Christian Academy Sabres, coached by Mike Callaway, and assisted by Kenton Barkman.

Organized as a way for northern and southern teams to play one another, the tournament has ensured fair rankings for provincials and furthermore it has been noted, through the years, that often the winner of this weekend becomes the Provincial 2A Champion: thus, it is a highly anticipated weekend.

While the first three games for PCA proved challenging for the Sabres, they came in strong in their last game, just behind the Picture Butte Sugar Kings, with a score of 62-56.

The Royals left the tournament with two wins and two losses, including a tough loss in their final game against The Immanuel Christian High School Eagles. While the game got away from the Royals in the first half, finding them down 24-48 at the break, a new team seemed to emerge from the dressing room in the third quarter with a scoring drive led by Gauge Hamm and Sidney Platt. However, it was not quite enough to secure a win and the Royals came up short at 82-69. La Crete took home gold with a win over Willow Creek.
