Local boys win Western Canadian Baseball Championship

Spitfires

Two local thirteen year olds, Jordan Bauer, of Torrington, and Nash Dettmer, of Trochu, have just wrapped up a very successful season with the Olds Spitfires Peewee AA baseball team.

The boys were selected to the team following evaluations in the spring, and competed in the Baseball Alberta league for the entire season.

The Spitfires hosted Peewee AA Tier 1 Provincials, earlier in the month, and ended up as Provincial champs with a perfect 5 win, 0 loss record through the championship tournament.

As provincial champions they won the right to represent Alberta at the Western Canada Baseball Championships. Westerns were held August 17-19 in La Broquerie, Manitoba (southeast of Winnipeg).

Olds’ first game was an 11-2 win over Abbotsford, British Columbia. Dettmer was named game MVP, on the strength of two triples and 3 RBIs.

In the Spitfires second game, they came up against the Sask Five Giants, based in Warman, Saskatchewan, and Sask came through with an 11-8 win.

On Saturday, Olds played two must-win games against Manitoba teams. First dominating the host Carillon Sultans by an 8-0 score, and then soundly defeating the Portage La Prairie Phillies by a 17-7 count.

With a 3-1 record, the Spitfires won the right at a rematch with the 3-1 Sask Five Giants.

The Spitfires exacted some revenge on Sunday afternoon, behind a strong pitching performance by Bauer. Jordan went 5 2/3 innings for the win, and was named game MVP. The final score was 12-6 in favor of the Olds Spitifres.

As Western Canadian Champions, the Olds Spitfires reaches the pinnacle of success for a team at this level of play. Both Bauer and Dettmer proudly wear the gold medals, as it is believed that this is the first ever Western Championship for an Olds area team.
